Would you pay more to fund the Sheriff? Lorain County sets hearing on sales tax hike

Published On:

ELYRIA, Ohio — The Lorain County Commissioners will hold a public hearing Tuesday afternoon on a proposed 0.25% sales-and-use tax increase aimed at funding the operations of the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office.

After the Lorain County Prosecutor’s Office

flagged legal concerns

with the original resolution, commissioners unanimously approved a revised resolution for the tax hike on July 1. The county must redo its public hearings because of the legal revisions, the first of which will take place July 22 at 3:30 p.m. at the County Administration Building in downtown Elyria.

The public hearings give residents the opportunity to weigh in on the proposed tax hike before the commissioners vote on whether to place the proposal on the November ballot.

The

tax increase

would raise the county’s total sales tax rate from 6.5% to 6.75%, generating approximately $13 million annually for the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office.

Tuesday’s session will be livestreamed on the Lorain County Commissioners’ YouTube channel.
