SOUTH CAROLINA — Two people died in separate motor vehicle accidents Thursday evening near Gaffney, according to Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler.

The first crash occurred just before 5:30 p.m. on Concord Road. A pickup truck traveling north veered off the side of the road, struck a ditch, and overturned.

The driver, identified as 49-year-old Kelvin Bernard Fernanders of Gaffney, was trapped in the vehicle and died at the scene.

The second fatal crash happened around 6:15 p.m. at the intersection of S.C. Highway 150 North and Grassy Pond Road.

A car traveling east on Grassy Pond Road pulled into the path of a southbound pickup truck on S.C. 150.

A passenger in the car, 77-year-old Linda Greene of Boiling Springs, North Carolina, was taken to Cherokee Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries.

It is currently unknown whether her husband, 84-year-old Richard Greene, who was also in the vehicle, sustained injuries.

Autopsies will be conducted on both victims as part of the ongoing investigation, Fowler said.
