Tight-knit group of needleworkers aim to Warm Up Medina County

Ohio’s Medina — At the Medina Library, located at 210 S. Broadway St., the Medina County District Library is gathering blankets, mittens, scarves, and hats that have been hand-knitted or crocheted in preparation for the upcoming winter.

Numerous yarn crafters at the Medina, Brunswick, and Highland branch libraries have been creating the products by hand for the past 21 years.

Others work from home or congregate at their churches.

Ten women who live and gather every Tuesday night at the Western Reserve Masonic Community, 4931 Nettleton Road, to knit or crochet and socialize are one group that donates dozens of items to the program.

Each member choose her own project, which may include laprobes, scarves, hats, slippers, or afghans.

They have made 21 scarves and 37 Afghans for the program so far this year.

The group’s leader and organizer, Martha Fousek, spoke warmly about the group’s accomplishments and two new chances for needleworkers on a recent evening.

On October 11, the Masonic Community will hold a Maker’s Market in the Community Center where locals can sell their handcrafted goods.

A table of goods will be offered for sale by the knitting group in order to generate funds for supplies, particularly yarn. The public will be able to purchase the item.

Additionally, in an effort to create more products for Warm Up Medina, the knitting club is opening to the public on August 6 at 10 a.m. The main foyer of the community is where the group meets.

According to Fousek, making afghans for Warm Up Medina is my love.

I’m hoping that people will join us in knitting and crocheting.

Staff personnel arrange the knitted and crocheted objects into boxes after they arrive at the library.

The community engagement team at the library emails nearby nonprofits in October to inquire about their needs.

The items on their wish lists are put in the community room to be picked up on the specified day after being bagged and labeled with the agency’s name.

To assist individuals in need, all donations remain in Medina County.

Medina County Job and Family Services, the women’s shelter, the Red Cross, The Salvation Army, Hope Recovery Center, and Birthcare Medina are a few of the organizations who get the final items.
