PARMA, Ohio — Parma once again celebrated July Fourth with a parade on Ridge Road that ended at the Shoppes at Parma.
“Once again, we had a fantastic Independence Day parade.” Parma Mayor Tim DeGeeter said. “Our auxiliary police set up the barricades and police officers were on site making sure everyone remained safe.
“Chris Knebusch, who has organized the parade for more than 25 years, did a stellar job of keeping it organized and on time. It’s a 90-minute parade, so that is no small task.”
This year’s parade included 400 participants with more than 3,500 spectators lining the street.
“We also observed spectators laying down blankets, putting up pop-up tents and arranging their chairs before 8:30 a.m.,” he said.
“The parade doesn’t start until 10 a.m. so that’s commitment. That’s how much residents love this parade.”
The event also kicked off the city’s month-long Christmas in July Food Drive with volunteers collecting donations along the parade route
The donations — everything from boxed, bagged and canned nonperishable food items to napkins, facial tissue, paper towels, toilet paper, toothpaste, soap, shampoo and other toiletries — amounted to more than 70 bags of groceries, which filled up a trailer.
The items will help fill the Parma Hunger Center’s food pantry.
“The Parma Hunger Center receives many donations around Thanksgiving and Christmas, but much less during the rest of the year,” Parma Hunger Center co-Director Dale Kraemer said.
“The donations we receive from Parma’s Christmas in July parade are a major boost for us.”
