Ohio A multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 70 in east Columbus early Thursday morning claimed one life and injured another.
The collision happened close to Reynoldsburg, near the intersection of I-70, I-270, and Brice Road, just before two in the morning, according to Columbus police.
When officers arrived, they discovered two injured individuals, one in critical condition and the other in stable condition. After being taken to a nearby hospital, the gravely injured individual was declared deceased at 3:02 a.m.
According to investigators, the incident started when a 2003 Hyundai Sonata stopped in the left lane of I-70 East and an unidentified adult was standing behind it.
Simultaneously, an adult in the adjacent lane in a 2006 Saturn S2 tried to pass another car by shifting into the left lane.
After hitting the person, the Saturn crashed with the Hyundai’s rear end.
The pedestrian was thrown over the Hyundai by the impact, and the Hyundai struck the cable median barrier. After rotating, the Saturn stopped in the highway’s second lane.
Police were informed by a witness that the Hyundai didn’t seem to have any lights on when the collision occurred.
For almost four hours, all lanes on I-70 East and both exit ramps from I-270 to I-70 East were blocked while the Columbus Police Accident Investigation Unit responded to the site. Around 5:45 a.m., the road was once again open.
Anyone with information regarding the collision is urged by the police to call the Accident Investigation Unit at (614) 645-4767. Additionally, Central Ohio Crime Stoppers accepts anonymous tips at (614) 461-8477.
