One person arrested following police standoff in Ohio

Ohio The Akron Police Department reports that after a police standoff near the METRO Robert K. Pfaff Transit Center on South Broadway Street on Sunday evening, a 40-year-old male was taken into custody.

Around 5:30 p.m., police arrived in the neighborhood to try to find Paul Thornton, who had outstanding warrants from a prior incident and was wanted in relation to a recent domestic disturbance.

Thornton allegedly drew a revolver, aimed it at the officer, and then ran away on foot when an officer approached him, according to the police.

Later, he was discovered lurking close to establishments on East Thornton Street and South Broadway Street.

Thornton threw the weapon away and eventually surrendered once the Akron SWAT Team and police negotiators arrived. The gun was later identified by authorities as a BB gun.

Thornton was accused of frightening domestic violence and impeding official business. The Summit County Jail received him.
