MLB investigating Guardians’ closer Emmanuel Clase for sports betting

CLEVELAND, Ohio — As part of the same betting probe into teammate Luis Ortiz, MLB has placed Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase on a non-disciplinary leave of absence through August 31.

Ortiz’s leave of absence, which had been in effect throughout the All-Star break, was extended until August 31.

Both players’ leaves of absence were agreed upon by MLB and the Major League Players Association.

For the past four years, Clase has been the dominant closer in the American League. After battling with an injured shoulder earlier this season, the three-time All-Star has now found his form.

In 29 chances, he has made 24 saves.

The club has not spoken, but it is likely that Cade Smith will take his place as the closer.

When the story originally broke in July, sources told Cleveland.com that no other Guardians player except Ortiz was under investigation.

MLB is looking into Ortiz for using his pitching during games to influence prop bets. MLB was primarily looking at two pitches where there was an abnormally high chance that Ortiz would hit a batter or throw a ball on his first pitch.

ESPN reports that the pitches in question occurred on June 15 against Seattle and June 27 against St. Louis. According to reports, MLB may be examining Ortiz’s performance throughout spring training and with the Pirates last season when they extend their inquiry into him.

During the winter meetings in December, Ortiz was purchased by the Guardians from the Pirates.

Joey Cantillo has done a respectable job for the Guardians in taking Ortiz’s place in the rotation. But losing Clase might be far more challenging.
