At 5.4 yards per game, they had the worst passing in Division I. Only the Army, Navy, and Air Force had lower average passing yards per game.

The victory increased Columbus’s mounting annoyance and supported the perception that the Wolverines had seized control of the rivalry. However, throughout the postseason, those sentiments changed.
In the ReliaQuest Bowl, Michigan upset No. 11 Alabama to end the season and become the only college football program in history to defeat the Crimson Tide twice in a single season. The message was apparent after the team placed eighth in the Big Ten.

A preview of the 2025 Michigan Wolverines
The Wolverines are hoping to start a new era with highly anticipated freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood, who they flipped from the LSU Tigers after being committed for almost a year, following a dismal offensive performance that produced historically poor results in head coach Sherrone Moore’s first full season.
He is regarded as one of the best quarterbacks of the modern age and the nation’s top recruit. Among the numerous athletes featured on the cover of the recently released EA College Football 26 video game is Underwood, who is generally considered to be the football star of the future for Michigan.
Underwood will be playing for Chip Lindsey, the new offensive coordinator who took over after Kirk Campbell’s disastrous tenure in Ann Arbor.
He has an aggressively fast prototype frame. Underwood has already demonstrated his poise and ability to plan deliberate throws in brief appearances. Repetition, downfield expansion, and gaining an understanding of the potential of his surrounding attack will be the exceptional talent’s biggest challenges.
The quarterback in Ann Arbor will also be Mikey Keene, a transfer from Fresno State. Should Underwood struggle in his opening two games, he will be a solid backup. The room is completed by red-shirt freshmen Jaydn Davis, senior Davis Warren, and Chase Herbstreit.
The Wolverines presence under center can only go up after amerry-go-round of misfortunelast year with three rotating quarterbacks who each took their turn in the starting role and underperformed consistently.
Additionally, Underwood’s supporting cast lacks demonstrated firepower. The Chicago Bears selected star tight end Colston Loveland, the offense’s one bright spot the previous season, with the tenth overall pick.
One wide receiver to keep an eye on for a breakthrough season is Donaven McCulley. The graduate transfer figures to make a potent impact for a position in need of a boost. Junior Fredrick Moore, red shirt senior transfer Anthony Simpson and red shirt junior tight end Marlin Klein will likely round out the receiving corps.
Justice Haynes, an Alabama junior transfer, could make the backfield interesting after losing Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards to the NFL Draft. He was the No. 2 running back for the Crimson Tide, thriving in his limited action with 79 carries for 448 yards and seven touchdowns. Haynes averaged 5.7 yards per carry, which was sixth for SEC running backs. The spotlight will be on Haynes to ignite Michigan s offense.
Haynes is joined by red shirt freshmanJordan Marshall, junior transfer CJ Hester, graduate transfer John Volker and red shirt freshman Micah Ka apana. The room is a work in progress for running backs coach Tony Alford.
After boasting one of the best offensive lines in 2023 s national championship run, Michigan s front took a significant step back last season. That team lost all five starters from the championship season. It s Grant Newsome s second year at the helm of the traditionally physical line, anda chance at a rebirth.
After eight games last season, red shirt senior Greg Crippen is a lock at center. Red shirt senior Gio El-Hadi is expected to start at left guard, while sophomore Evan Link is making a case for the left tackle position. Red shirt freshman Andrew Sprague is putting himself in prime position at right tackle with red shirt sophomore Nathan Efobi competing for the top spot at left guard.
Red shirt sophomore left tackle Brady Norton and red shirt sophomore Lawrence Hatter are also expected to compete for starting roles.
Under defensive coordinator Wink Martindale,the Wolverines will boast a solid defense once again, and that s after losing Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant and Josiah Stewart to the NFL Draft. Star safety Rod Moore is back from a torn ACL from last March and Tre Williams, a sixth-year Clemson defensive tackle transfer, will plug in an immediate spot. Edge rusher Derrick Moore,who has stoked the rivalry fires, and defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny are also expected to be key contributors to the dynamic unit.
After recently being named a Walter Camp preseason All-American,senior kicker Dominic Zvada once again provides a sure-fire anchor in the kicking game. Zvada converted 21-of-22 field goals for a single-season record of 95.5%. He also went 7-of-7 from 50-plus yards and nabbed 26-of-27 PAT conversions. He has named a 2024 first-team All-American by the Sporting News.
