Man pleads guilty to targeting Ohio State students in antisemitic attack

Columbus, Ohio According to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice, an Ohio man entered a guilty plea on Friday to committing a hate crime against Jewish students at Ohio State University.

Timur Mamatov, 20, of Tipp City, reportedly acknowledged breaking the federal Hate Crimes Prevention Act by physically attacking and hurting two students due to their religious beliefs.

If he attends Ohio State is not stated in court filings.

U.S. Attorney Dominick S. Gerace II for the Southern District of Ohio stated that Mamatov acknowledged in court today that he had abused people because they were Jewish. No American should have to worry about being attacked brutally because of their faith. Our law enforcement partners and my agency will vigorously combat hate-fueled violence.

According to the announcement, Mamatov and a buddy confronted five students outside a Columbus tavern on North High Street on November 10, 2023.

Mamatov assaulted two of the students after confirming their faith. Prosecutors claim that as the fight spilled into the street, one victim sustained a cracked jaw and another a broken nose.

Following the start of the Israel-Hamas War in the fall of 2023, the attack prompted numerous complaints to be made with the U.S. Department of Education, alleging that Ohio State was not doing enough to prevent antisemitic harassment and discrimination on campus.

Along with dozens of other colleges around the country, Ohio State was forewarned by U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon of the possible repercussions if the university did not take further action to protect Jewish students.

Although the Trump administration has been cracking down on alleged left-wing bias at campuses across the country, OSU President Ted Carter stated on Face The Nation last month that he was not feeling a lot of pressure from the administration.
