Man dies after metal necklace mishap in MRI exam room

WESTBURY, New York — A 61-year-old man was killed after being pulled into an MRI machine at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, Long Island, while wearing a metal chain around his neck,

the Associated Press reported

.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition Wednesday, where he died from his injuries the next day,

People Magazine reported

. He has not yet been publicly identified.

Authorities say the incident unfolded when the man entered the MRI room during an active scan, despite protocols strictly prohibiting metallic items. The machine’s powerful magnetic field attracted the chain and initiated what officials described as a “medical episode,” according to AP.

MRI scanners use powerful magnets that can attract, heat, or move metal objects, making them potentially dangerous for people wearing or carrying metal items,

according to the Cleveland Clinic

.

The Clinic strongly urges people to leave all jewelry and other accessories at home or remove them before an MRI scan, as metal and electronic items can become harmful projectiles in the exam room.

Staff at Nassau Open MRI declined to comment on the matter, and the Nassau County Police Department has confirmed an ongoing investigation,
