The Phillies (54-40) are in first place in the NL East. They are trying to hold off the second place New York Mets, who are just half of a game back in the standings at 54-41.

The Padres (51-43), meanwhile, are in third place in the NL West. The Los Angeles Dodgers (56-39) are in first place with a four-game cushion, and the Padres trail the second place San Francisco Giants by just half of a game.

A three-run San Diego second inning in Friday’s series opening matchup between the two sides lifted the Padres to a 4-2 victory over the Phillies.

Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos hit home runs for the Phillies in the second and third inning respectively, but it was not enough to overcome a Padres homer from Manny Machado and runs from Xander Bogaerts, Jackson Merrill and Jose Iglesias.

Padres players to watch

Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. are the head of the household for the Padres. Machado, a veteran third baseman, recently recorded his 2,000th career hit and remains a steady presence both offensively and defensively.

Tatis, the 2023 Gold Glove winner, has rebounded from injury with an impressive start, hitting over .300 and delivering in big moments.

The Padres have also seen strong contributions from rookie outfielder Jackson Merrill, who’s impressed with both his bat and defense in center field.

Pitchers Dylan Cease and Adrian Morejón have anchored their pitching committee, with Cease leading the rotation and Morejón dominating out of the bullpen. That makes addition of Yu Darvish a welcome sight for a team that already has plenty of talent on the mound.

Zack Wheeler and Kyle Schwarber have been the Phillies’ top two players in 2025. Wheeler, the veteran right‑hander, has been Philadelphia’s ace, logging 16 starts with a 2.55 ERA and anchoring the rotation with a league‑leading WHIP.

Schwarber, meanwhile, leads the National League in home runs with 24 and has posted a remarkable .283/.411/.739 slash line, making him a potent threat atop the order.

With others like Bryce Harper, Trea Turner and Nick Castellanos in the lineup it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the Phillies are one of baseball’s best teams.

Right-handed pitcher Zach Wheeler is expected to start Saturday for the Phillies, while Padres righty Yu Darvish is expected to start on the other side.

The Phillies ace, Wheeler, is 9-3 this season with 2.17 ERA and 148 strikeouts so far.

Darvish, meanwhile, made his season debut on July 7 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. After being sidelined with right elbow inflammation during spring training and having his expected return date pushed back after suffering a setback during his recovery, Darvish threw 63 pitches with five strikeouts in his debut.
