Following their absence from Wednesday’s MLS All-Star Game, Messi and teammate Jordi Alba were both given matchday suspensions. Alba was recovering from a pre-break muscle strain, while Messi, who has played every minute in 22 of 23 games since April 2, took a break.
According to an MLS statement, players who do not play in the All-Star Game without first receiving league consent are not allowed to play in their club’s subsequent game.
