The Detroit Tigers are in first position in the division standings going into the series, and the Twins and Guardians are both pursuing them. The game tonight is the first for either team since roster changes on both teams occurred during Thursday’s MLB trade deadline.
A look at the Guardians
With a 54-54 record going into the game, Cleveland is nine games behind Detroit in second place but still very much in the running for a wild-card berth. With an 8-5 record since the All-Star break, the Guardians have recently shown flashes of life.
However, when closer Emmanuel Clase was put on non-disciplinary paid vacation earlier this week as part of Major League Baseball’s investigation into sports betting, their perspective completely changed. The three-time All-Star joined starter Luis Ortiz as the second Cleveland pitcher to be suspended due to gambling-related concerns.
Days before the trade deadline, Clase was suspended, which cemented the Guardians’ status as a seller rather than a buyer. They sent former Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber, who has yet to throw this season, on a rehab assignment to the Toronto Blue Jays and sold veteran reliever Paul Sewald to the Tigers.
Despite this, the squad has maintained its focus on the field, defeating the Colorado Rockies twice this week at home. First baseman Kyle Manzardowent was 5-for-10 with two home runs and three RBIs in the series, while designated hitter David Fry smacked a two-run homer in Wednesday’s 5-0 series finale victory.
A look at the Twins
Minnesota has lost four of its past five games and is 51-57 going into the matchup. The Twins decided to focus on the future at the trade deadline, sending their outstanding closer, Jhoan Duran, to the Philadelphia Phillies in return for Mick Abel and Eduardo Tait, two of the team’s top prospects. They also sent experienced starter Chris Paddack to Detroit, which leads the division, earlier in the week.
Even worse, Byron Buxton, the team’s best offensive player, is still sidelined due to a rib injury. The Twins lost two of three games at home to the Red Sox this week, including a 13-1 thumping on Wednesday, demonstrating the impact of the deals and injuries.
