Cleveland, Ohio Sign theft, domestic abuse, sexual assault, drug use, international signing violations, sexual harassment, and sports betting are all under the purview of Major League Baseball’s Department of Investigations.
Luis Ortiz and Emmanuel Clase, pitchers for the Guardians, are the subject of an ongoing investigation by the department for claims of gambling. Here is a peek at the investigation being conducted by the department.

How did this happen to Ortiz?
In order to investigate Ortiz’s gambling charges, MLB placed him on a non-disciplinary leave of absence on July 3.
MLB has partnerships with integrity betting companies and regulated sportsbooks. 40 sportsbooks were notified by integrity betting company IC360 of anomalous betting trends on two of Ortiz’s throws, one on June 15 and the other on June 27.
Sources claim that Ortiz is under investigation for allegedly influencing micro-bets or prop bets while he was on the mound. Prop bets are targeted wagers on particular game events. They don’t always include the game’s winner or loser.
Unusual activity occurred after Ortiz threw a ball or struck a batter on his opening pitch of an inning in the games on June 15 and June 27. In every instance, he tossed balls.
On July 17, MLB’s initial inquiry into Ortiz was supposed to conclude. It was extended till August 31 on July 17.
How did Clase get involved?
MLB is thought to have looked into Clase as a result of its probe into Ortiz. Clase was placed on a non-disciplinary leave of absence by MLB on Monday, which will last until August 31.
For the past four years, Clase has been the dominant closer in the American League and has been named to the All-Star team three times.
It is thought that Clase is being looked into for influencing prop bets, just like Ortiz.
Who else is involved?
According to both MLB and the Guardians, the probe is not anticipated to have any effect on any other Guardians players or staff. As the inquiry goes on, it’s the closest MLB can come to ensuring that another Guardians employee won’t be tapped on the shoulder.
According to sources who spoke to Cleveland.com at the start of the investigation, Ortiz was the only Cleveland organization member implicated.
Innocent until proven otherwise
Until proven guilty, Ortiz and Clase are assumed innocent. They were placed on a non-disciplinary leave of absence for this reason.

Additionally, it should be noted that MLB does not typically remove players from games when teams are trying to regroup for the final stretch unless there is a valid reason.

To put it another way, if you re on the Guardians and you re playing the Tigers, and you bet on the Guardians, you re banned for life even if you didn t play in the game.

But if you re on the Guardians and you bet on a game between the Marlins and Angels, and you have no part in that game, you could be banned for a year.

Last year MLB banned Padres utility man Tucupita Marcano for life for betting on games. They suspended four other players for a year each for breaking sports betting rules.
