Town of Nashville, Tennessee The pop duo Daryl Hall and John Oates, who created a number of megahits in the 1970s and 1980s, have settled a contentious financial disagreement in court.
Details were not released, although the agreement was filed in Nashville on Monday. It closes a 2023 lawsuit that Hall had brought against Oates. Hall said in the complaint that Oates had betrayed him and that he no longer trusted his former bandmate with respect to their music rights.
According to the lawsuit, Oates told Hall’s representatives that he intended to keep his ownership of the duo’s music rights while trying to sell his portion of them.
Oates said in his own statement that he was disappointed by what his longtime partner had said and that Hall’s claims that Oates had broken their agreement and gone behind his back were untrue. Oates refused to elaborate, claiming that even if Hall didn’t, he still had a duty to keep information confidential.
Robb Harvey, Hall’s attorney, declined to comment on the settlement, according to the Associated Press, and Oates’s representatives did not reply to a request for comment.
The two are unlikely to perform together again, even after the settlement. In March, 78-year-old Hall told The Times of London that there was no possibility of their reconciling.
“That ship has reached the ocean’s bottom,” Hall told The Times. I’m somewhat accustomed to it because I’ve had a lot of surprises, letdowns, and betrayals throughout my life.
Thanks to a series of songs that started in the 1970s and continued into the 1980s, such as Maneater, Rich Girl, Kiss on My List, and I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do), Hall and Oates were elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.
With over 60 million records sold, they are regarded as one of the most successful rock duos in history.
