CHICAGO — The Guardians went into the All-Star break having played some of their best baseball on this just completed seven-game trip through Houston and Chicago.
The trip ended on a good note in a 6-5 win over White Sox in 10 innings at Rate Field. It sent the Guardians into the All-Star break with a 6-1 record on this trip.
They are hopeful some of that momentum will stay with them as play resumes on Friday.
Last year at the break, the Guardians were 58-37 and on the way to a AL Central title and a strong showing in the postseason. This year they’re 45-50 with a lot of question to answer in the final 67 games of the season.
The Guardians won it on a Steven Kwan sacrifice fly in the 10th inning that scored Angel Martinez, the automatic runner, from third. An infield single by pinch-hitter David Fry moved Martinez to third.
Emmanuel Clase (5-2) pitched the final two innings for the win.

Chicago starter Aaron Civale, after putting the Guardians to sleep through five innings, ran into problems in the sixth.
Brayan Rocchio started it with a one-out double off the right field fence. Kwan and Nolan Jones worked Civale for consecutive walks to load the bases.
Jose Ramirez sent what may have been a double-play ball to first baseman Miguel Vargas. He threw to shortstop Chase Meidroth for the force, but Civale didn’t covered first base, so Meidroth had to hold the ball as Rocchio scored to make it 3-1.
Kyle Manzardo, the next batter, ended Civale’s afternoon as he sent his first pitch deep into the right field bleachers for a 4-3 lead. Manzardo’s 16th homer, and second in as many games, traveled an estimated 418 feet.
The Guardians traded Civale to Tampa Bay at the trade deadline in 2023. They two met for the first time before Saturday night’s game and posed for a picture by the Guardians’ dugout.
Cleveland starter Joey Cantillo came out for the sixth after using 80 pitches to get through the first five innings. He struck out Lenyn Sosa, but lefty Andrew Benintendi homered to right to tie the score at 4-4.
It was the third homer Cantillo has allowed to a lefty this season.
Matt Festa, who seems to pitch every day for the Guardians since being acquired from Texas on April 30, relieved and ended the inning.
Ramirez put the Guardians back in front, 5-4, with a sacrifice fly in the eighth to give him 49 RBI.
Chicago responded with a run of its own in the eighth to make it 5-5. Cade Smith had two outs when he intentionally walked Benintendi, who had hits in his three previous at-bats. Luis Robert Jr. spoiled the strategy with a double past third to score Edgar Quero from second.
Quero reached on one-out double that scooted past a sliding Kwan in left field.
