Enable: The Disability Podcast, episode 1: Focus on what you can do, not what you can’t

Published On:

A brand-new podcast called Enable: The Disability Podcast tells the tales of remarkable individuals with various disabilities and abilities.

Kurt Hower and Geoff DeafGeoff Herbert, co-hosts of Enable, introduce themselves in Episode 1 and discuss their personal struggles and experiences. Herbert had severe binaural hearing loss from birth. Hower suffers from ankylosing spondylitis, an uncommon condition that results in spinal arthritis.

Through the podcast, Herbert and Hower hope to share other people’s stories, draw attention to accessible resources, and impart the value of concentrating on what you can do rather than what you can’t.

According to Herbert, the term “disability” is not derogatory.

“People appreciate my contributions,” Hower continues. Therefore, even if I may be lacking in one area, I may be strong in another.

About the hosts

Geoff Herbert has been with Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard for 15 years as a reporter, SEO Lead, and content supervisor. He has 25 years of experience as a DJ, including 10 years in radio (as DeafGeoff) and 10 years as a wedding DJ in Upstate New York, despite being primarily deaf in both ears. He adopted assistive technologies such as closed captioning/subtitles, video calls, and visual waveforms in music programs after learning how to interact orally through speech therapy, lipreading, and hearing aids.

With more than 35 years of experience at Advance Local, Kurt Hower is a community and media leader. In addition to serving on numerous boards, such as the Central PA Chapter Arthritis Foundation Board of Directors, where he was Chairman of Board Development and a member of the Public Policy and Advocacy Committee, he has been actively involved in spearheading change as the print industry has continued to undergo rapid change. He exhorts people to put less emphasis on their difficulties and more on what they can offer society.

Enable: Every week, new episodes of The Disability Podcast will be posted on YouTube and all other major podcast sites.
