BRUNSWICK, Ohio — A 36-year-old Brunswick man is in custody following a nine-hour standoff with police and members of the Southwest Enforcement Bureau at a Grafton Road home July 16.

Brunswick Police Chief Robert Safran said the incident began shortly after 7:30 a.m. when members of the Northeast Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force were attempting to serve a warrant for a parole violation on Bryce Babics at his home at 2876 Grafton Road.

“He barricaded himself (in the house) with a rifle,” Safran said.

“Our road units and SWAT members from the Southwest Enforcement Bureau (arrived) and attempted to negotiate with him to come out peacefully.”

Safran said Babics’ wife was also inside the house during the incident.

“At one point he classified her as a hostage, and at another point she said she didn’t want to leave,” Safran said.

The woman eventually exited the home, but negotiations with Babics were not successful, Safran said

“Gas was deployed into the home and the tactical team removed (Babics),” he said.

Babics was medically cleared at the scene and taken to the Medina County Jail.

Safran said he is charged with aggravated menacing and weapons under disability. The AR-15 style rifle used by Babics was seized by police.

Members of the Brunswick Division of Fire and Brunswick Hills Police and Fire departments also responded to the incident.
