Avon Dairy Treat receives historic designation: Short Takes on Avon, Avon Lake and North Ridgeville

Published On:

Avon, Ohio

Long before ice cream shops like Mitchell’s and Handel’s came to town, Avon’s staple for cool summer treats was and still is the Avon Dairy Treat, also known to long-time Avonites as ‘The Lick.’

Located at 37175 Colorado Avenue, Avon Dairy Treat has been a cherished part of the Avon community since it was first opened in 1956 by the Al and Bertha Schneider Family.

It was purchased by the Reynolds Family in the 1970s, and the stand has retained its original cinder block construction and distinctive drive-in style architecture — making it the only structure of its kind in Avon.

This piece of Avon history was recently recognized by the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission as an official Avon Historical Landmark. The nomination was made by Commission Vice Chair Ralph White and unanimously approved by Commission members during the July 9 meeting.

A commemorative plaque was presented to the Reynolds Family by Commission Chair Cynthia Murnyack-Czarnecki, honoring their continued stewardship of the beloved local institution.

For generations, Avon Dairy Treat has played a meaningful role in the lives of local residents. It’s where many Avon teens held their first jobs, and where families and friends gathered after school, following Little League games, or just to enjoy warm summer evenings, according to the press release.

Health survey:

Several areas of the county have been randomly selected for the upcoming National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) annual sample.

Professional interviewers will be conducting the survey in the city now through the end of September.

NHANES is a national survey that measures the health and nutrition of adults and children in the United States. It is run by the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and is the only nationally representative study that collects information based on interviews and physical exams, according to the press release.

Randomly selected households receive letters from NHANES inviting them to participate, and representatives visit those households to conduct in-person interviews.

After completing the interview, individuals will be asked to schedule a confidential physical exam at the NHAMES Mobile Exam Center, which will be located at Lorain County Community College, 1005 Abbe Road, Elyria, through the end of September.

NORTH RIDGEVILLE

Old Town Hall update:

It’s been more than two years since the Old Town Hall building, 36119 Center Ridge Road, was ordered to be closed due to failing electrical systems and other safety issues within the aging building.

Many have wondered what will be done to preserve the building and bring it back up to code.

City officials recently held (July 9) a stakeholder meeting which included dialogue and insights shared regarding the future of the historic space.

The input will be instrumental in shaping a vision that honors the building’s past, while imagining new possibilities for its use, according to city officials.

Based on the feedback received, refinements will be made to the concept plans, with the goal of sharing updated ideas with the broader community in the coming months.

Homemade goodies:

A beekeeping and wine making supply stand that offers homemade items such as BBQ sauces, raw honey, apple butters, and homemade jams is located inside 83 Gardens, 5917 Avon Belden Road.
