To Eric,I was given an Alzheimer’s diagnosis a few years ago. Even my amazing 45-year-old husband and many of my friends do not realize that I have no other options.
I’ve always been a really gregarious person, but I know they all mean well. I took vocal lessons for two years since I love to sing. I enjoy dancing, watching movies, solving word searches, jigsaw puzzles, and more.
Thank God, I don’t drive anymore, so there are days when I don’t see or talk to anyone. Even though I know a lot of people, I still feel lonely and cry occasionally. I
accepted the existence of Alzheimer’s. What depresses me is the absence of social gatherings.
I’m by myself. What would you recommend?
Desiring Company
To the Company:I’m so sad to hear that loneliness is affecting you. This need not be the case. Alzheimer’s and other illnesses can be lonely, but there are ways your spouse and friends can support you. Make a list of the social relationships you’re missing and give it to your spouse. Ask him to assist you by considering changes or substitutes that will meet you where you are. Your capacity is known to you and your care team. Even while some things might no longer be feasible, encouraging your spouse to use his imagination could lead to some new opportunities for you. He seems to be struggling to understand some of the most challenging aspects of your experience, even while he means well, as you write.
Naturally, you can’t handle this issue by yourself. However, providing your spouse and possibly close friends with specific strategies to support you could help them become better advocates and restore some of the connection you’re looking for.
Additionally, you might choose to use an online or in-person Alzheimer’s support group. Excellent resources are available atalz.org. These organizations will give you real social connections in addition to connecting you with people who share your experiences.
