Akron man gets life in prison for shooting death of 24-year-old woman

AKRON, OH A court in Summit County has sentenced an Akron man to life in prison for shooting a lady to death while her small kid was standing close by.

Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich said that 20-year-old Akron resident Denzel Pope will be eligible for parole following his 30-year jail sentence. Pope was found guilty last week of two counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, and one count of possessing weapons while disabled in connection with the July 2024 shooting death of 24-year-old Paige Calich.

In a statement, Kolkovich declared, “I do not and will not tolerate gun violence in Summit County.” The crime that took Paige Calich’s life and deprives her little children of their mother cannot be justified.

Even though there is nothing that can replace Paige’s loss, I hope that this sentence can help her family move on.

Last week, Pope’s sister and co-defendant, 26-year-old Corvette Pope, was also given a prison sentence of five to seven years for her involvement in Calich’s death.

According to the prosecution, Corvette Pope and Calich fought at Summit Lake apartments in July 2024. Corvette and Denzel Pope visited Calich’s flat at Socrates Place around two hours later.

Prosecutors claim that Calich and his 3-year-old kid left the apartment after the Popes arrived. Prosecutors claim that Denzel Pope shot Calich with a shotgun after he seen her enter her porch.

Denzel later departed the state, and both Popes escaped. Later, Denzel Pope was taken into custody in Chicago.
