LOS ANGELES — Thirty years after “Clueless” debuted and defined a generation’s fashion and slang, Mattel has unveiled two new Barbie dolls styled after the film’s most iconic BFFs:
Cher Horowitz
and
Dionne Davenport
. The special dolls are in celebration of the 1995 cult classic’s 30th anniversary.
The Barbie Signature Collection’s latest release includes a detailed Cher doll wearing her unforgettable yellow plaid blazer and skirt combo, white knee-high socks and platform Mary Janes. Designed by Javi Meabe, the collectible also comes with accessories straight out of Cher’s Beverly Hills closet: A mini white backpack, a cell phone and a learner’s permit.
A Dionne doll is also part of the anniversary lineup. The Dionne doll comes with a signature black-and-white plaid suit, with her iconic top hat and a fuzzy red sweater vest. She accessorizes with black knee-high socks and matching platform heels.
“It’s always fun for new Barbie dolls to come out, especially pop culture-related ones,” said Alex Darus, life and culture reporter at cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer. “It’s hard to believe that ‘Clueless’ is already 30 and it seems long overdue to have Cher and Dionne dolls.”
Priced at $60 and currently available for pre-order, the Cher doll is expected to ship on or before Sept. 26, while the Dionne doll is expected to ship on or before Sept. 12, Mattel said. The doll is part of Barbie’s Gold Label collection, meaning it will be produced in limited quantities and packaged with a Certificate of Authenticity, according to Mattel.
“Clueless” was released in the U.S. on July 19, 1995
.
The movie follows Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone), a wealthy and stylish teen navigating life at a Beverly Hills high school. Confident in her matchmaking skills and armed with an iconic computerized closet, Cher plays Cupid for her teachers and classmates, starting with a new student, Tai Frasier (Brittany Murphy), a shy transfer. Cher gives Tai a full makeover in the movie.
The movie also stars Stacey Dash as Dionne Davenport; Donald Faison as Murray; Paul Rudd as Josh; Dan Hedaya as Cher’s overprotective father Mel; Wallace Shawn as Mr. Hall and Twink Caplan as Miss Geist.
Loosely inspired by Jane Austen’s “Emma,” the film offers a mix of heart and humor. From its iconic wardrobe to phrases like “As if!” and “Totally buggin’,” the movie captured the essence of ’90s youth and style.
Mattel is also selling a
mini Clueless Polly Pocket
, a
Clueless Little People Collection
and
Clueless UNO
.
