Cleveland, Ohio Beaches in the Cleveland area will have varied water quality on Monday, but swimmers face a risk unrelated to bacterial levels:large waves and a significant chance of rip currents.
Because waves of three to five feet are predicted, the National Weather Service has issued a beach hazards statement and is encouraging swimmers to avoid the sea until Monday evening.
Forecasters said in the announcement that swimmers shouldn’t go into the water. Through a sand bar and along structures that stretch out into the lake, currents can transport swimmers away from the shore.
Water quality
The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District has predicted that Edgewater Beach’s levels of E. coli bacteria and algae blooms will fall under water quality guidelines.
The sewer district predicts that high E. coli levels will result in poor water quality at Villa Angela Beach.
By mid-morning Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey’s sNowCast, which usually monitors Huntington Beach, had not reported water conditions.
The sewer district estimates the amount of bacteria at nearby beaches using computer modeling. To forecast the possibility of higher bacteria, these models take into account recent meteorological factors like wind, water temperature, and rainfall. The EPA warns that E. coli concentrations may above federal safety guidelines for swimming if there is more than a 50% possibility of high levels.
Although beaches are not always closed by advisories, officials stress that swimmers should check for the most recent information on safety and water conditions before going.
Water temperatures remain warm
Beaches in the Cleveland area continue to have seasonably warm water. The sewage district reported that the surface temperatures of Lake Erie were 75.6 degrees at Edgewater Beach and 76.1 degrees at Villa Angela Beach.
