Avon Lake High School tops in Lorain County

According to U.S. News and World Report’s rankings of the best high schools, Avon and Avon Lake have always performed well. The magazine recently announced the 2025–2026 findings.

Nationwide, the magazine evaluates almost 24,000 public high schools. Based on how effectively they prepare kids for college and how well they perform on state examinations, over 18,000 schools were graded on six criteria.

College preparation (30%), college curriculum breadth (10%), state assessment performance (20%), state assessment proficiency (20%), underserved student performance (10%), and high school graduation rate (10%) were among the weights and criteria used to rank schools this year.

Avon

In comparison to earlier rankings, Avon High School fell a little. The school is now ranked No. 15, in the Cleveland metropolitan region, No. 47 in Ohio, and No. 1,206 nationally.

According to the magazine’s summary, students at Avon High School can enroll in Advanced Placement (AP) courses and tests. 59% of students at Avon High School participate in AP. Thirteen percent of students are economically challenged, and twenty percent of students are minority.

There are 1,428 students enrolled in grades 9–12 at the high school. 95 percent of students graduate.

Lake Avon

The top-ranked school in Lorain County is Avon Lake High School. The school is ranked No. 8 in the Cleveland metropolitan region, No. 25 in Ohio, and No. 722 nationally.

Avon Lake High School was ranked No. 1 in Lorain County, No. 10 in the Cleveland metropolitan region, No. 34 in Ohio, and No. 842 nationally a year ago (2024).

69% of students at Avon Lake High School participate in AP. 15% of pupils are economically challenged, and 11% of students are minority.

There are 1,069 students enrolled in grades 9–12 at the high school. The percentage of graduates is 93%.

Michael May, the administrator of Avon Lake High School, wrote in an email that the school is pleased to be among the top 25 high schools in Ohio, among the best in the nation, and still the greatest high school in Lorain County. The devotion of our students and staff, the support of our families, district administration, the board of education, and the community, as well as our shared goal to assisting all kids in achieving personal success within an incredible culture, are all reflected in this honor, which goes beyond simple statistics.

Ridgeville, North

North Ridgeville High School is ranked No. 38 in the Cleveland metropolitan region, No. 4,403 nationally, and No. 160 in Ohio.

35% of students at North Ridgeville High School participate in AP. Thirty percent of students are economically challenged, and fifteen percent of students are minority.

There are 1,263 students enrolled in grades 9–12 at the high school. Ninety percent of students graduate.
