Browns Dillon Gabriel starting today vs. Eagles but most starters will rest

Published On:

The city of Philadelphia In terms of receiving a preseason start, third-round pick Dillon Gabriel of the Browns will start tonight against the Eagles in the second preseason game, placing him on par with fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders.

While the majority of the Browns starters will rest for the second preseason game, Gabriel will primarily play alongside backups. Sanders will be in uniform today but won’t play since he strained his left oblique muscle (the side of the abdomen) early in Wednesday’s joint practice.

Dylan Sampson, Harold Fannin Jr., Carson Schwesinger, and Mason Graham are among the Browns’ top draft selections who aren’t anticipated to play today but are likely to start or play important roles.

While some will be wearing uniforms, they will be on the sidelines among veterans like Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward, Jerry Jeudy, and others.

The Browns are hoping that Sanders will play in the third and final preseason game, the dress rehearsal game against the Rams at Huntington Bank Field, next Saturday, but they will be cautious with him because the oblique helps control the throwing motion. Before the game, while he wasn’t yet in uniform, Sanders threw a few short passes to David Njoku, giving fans hope that he may play against the Rams.

More Cleveland Browns coverage

When Sanders dominated the Panthers last week, throwing for 138 yards and two touchdown passes to Kaden Davis, he created a lot of enthusiasm in Browns Town. He played 45 snaps and scored three touchdowns in his nine drives. During the game, Browns general manager Andrew Berry informed him that he was proud of his performance and that it was something to improve upon.

Due to the hamstring injury he sustained during practice on August 2, Gabriel’s ability to start today was in doubt.

He got plenty of 11-on-11s during the two days of joint workouts here versus the Eagles after returning to them on Monday.

Sanders’ spectacular debut set the bar high for Gabriel, who spent the most of camp as the third-team quarterback. Prior to the Panthers’ backups taking over, Sanders participated in two series against their starting lineup.

Today’s game against the Eagles will primarily feature backups for Gabriel. He should be able to play at least the first half, the Browns hope.

Not expected to play are Browns.
