Ohio’s Fairport Harbor After being postponed several times, a boat parade that was supposed to commemorate two lighthouse anniversaries in Lake County has been canceled.
The Fairport Harbor Historical Society reported on Facebook that the Parade in the Port, which was last scheduled for 6 p.m. on August 2, had been canceled owing to poor interest.
Regretfully, we did not get the response we were hoping for. The ad stated, “Please come visit us as we continue to celebrate our 200th Anniversary.”
Originally planned on June 14, the event was rescheduled for August after being postponed to June 28.
The purpose of the procession was to honor the 100th anniversary of the Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Lighthouse in Painesville Township and the 200th anniversary of the original Fairport Harbor Lighthouse.
Boaters were asked to decorate their vessels with themes of Halloween, Christmas, or the Fourth of July. The top submissions in each category would get rewards.
Earlier this summer, the city commemorated the occasion even though the parade was called off. The group honored the first lighthouse, constructed in 1825, with a 200th anniversary banquet on June 21.
The original tower had an octagonal-shaped iron lantern and was thirty feet high, according to the Fairport Harbor Marine Museum and Lighthouse website. Due to decay, it was replaced in 1871 together with a two-story keeper’s residence.
The 60-foot-tall reconstructed lighthouse is still accessible to the public today as a museum exhibit.
On Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, as well as on legal holidays, the marine museum and lighthouse located at 129 W. Second St., are open from noon until six o’clock. Call 440-354-8425 or visit fairportharborlighthouse.org for additional information.
