CLEVELAND, Ohio Longtime WEWS Channel 5 meteorologist Mark Johnson is making a comeback to the air, but not in Cleveland just yet.
TEGNA, the parent company of WKYC Channel 3, has recruited Johnson to provide weather forecasts for its nationwide network of 64 television stations.
In a statement, a business representative stated, “We are thrilled to welcome Mark Johnson to TEGNA, where he will be assisting meteorologists across multiple stations with weather forecasting and broadcasts.” He is an industry veteran, and we think our teams would benefit from his unmatched knowledge in weather reporting and forecasting.
Johnson’s new position at WKYC does not involve an on-air role, which is unusual in a field where non-compete agreements are prevalent. It wouldn’t be shocking, though, if the Kent State University alumnus ended up working for the local NBC affiliate.
The general manager of WKYC did not respond to a message asking for comment. However, the TEGNA representative stated that the business does not comment on the particulars of its contracts.
Two and a half months after his unexpected departure from WEWS, where he served as chief meteorologist for more than thirty years, Johnson was hired. No particular explanation for his departure was provided by the station. Rather, it characterized the incident as a personnel issue and implied that his actions might not have adhered to the station’s and its parent company’s highest ethical standards.
Mark works as a professional model. At the time, his agent, Dan Levin, replied, “There is no conduct that would be deemed inappropriate.”
Johnson has kept his supporters interested during his off-air time by releasing updates on social media and pictures of his gardening endeavors, family time, and sunsets.
