Worker dies after ejection from lift bucket in downtown Willoughby

Detective Lt. John Begovic stated that the victim had been operating from an elevated lift bucket that was connected to a parked vehicle when Willoughby police and fire units arrived at the scene in front of DavEd’s Jewelers at approximately 9:47 a.m.

The worker was ejected from the bucket when a box truck traveling north on Erie Street collided with the extended lift arm. Begovic said he was flung across the street and collided with a parked car.

Before Willoughby Fire & Rescue could arrive, bystanders started performing CPR. After being taken to University Hospitals Lake West Medical Center, the subject was declared dead shortly after.

The victim’s name has not yet been made public by authorities. According to authorities, the box truck driver was clearly upset but not physically hurt. There are currently no charges pending.

While the Lake County Accident Investigation Unit arrived to help in the investigation, which is still ongoing, Erie Street was closed for a few hours.
