Sen. Bernie Moreno should visit a hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit and observe a 12-year-old girl on life support in response to his worry that installing intoxication detection equipment would increase car prices (“Bernie Moreno’s tone deaf approach to drunken driving is exposed on Capitol Hill, July 19)). Since they were only allowed to visit her bedside for brief periods of time, her parents kept watch in the waiting room around-the-clock for two months.
In order to help my brother and spend some time with my niece, I went to the hospital every night after work. On a Saturday afternoon, she had been struck by an intoxicated driver.
Regretfully, my niece did not make it through. According to my brother, parents shouldn’t bury their kids. It shattered our family. Someone who has lost a loved one as a result of someone drinking and driving should be the target of Bernie Moreno’s remarks regarding impairment-detection technology in automobiles.
