Guardians taking a wait-and-see approach to prospect Chase DeLauter’s sore wrist

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Guardians are waiting to see how Chase DeLauter’s right wrist responds at Triple-A Columbus before determining if further tests are necessary.

Well, it seems like those tests might be necessary after DeLauter was not in the starting lineup Friday for Triple-A Columbus when it opened a three-game series against the Cubs Triple-A team in Iowa.

DeLauter, the Guardians’ No.1 pick in 2022, has been trying to play through the injury for the last two weeks.

The pain in the wrist kept DeLauter out of the last two games for the Clippers before the All-Star break. The Guardians allowed DeLauter to go home for the break.

On Thursday, he went through a workout with the Clippers and was able to tolerate the pain, said GM Mike Chernoff.

“He got through the workout with tolerable pain yesterday,” said Chernoff. “Today he’s ramping up to see if he can play. Then we’ll assess and see where it goes today.”

Chernoff talked to reporters before the Clippers announced their lineup. When asked what course of action the team would take if DeLauter was still in pain on Friday, he said, “We would assess the level of that pain and determine whether imaging is required. But right now, we want to get through today.’”

As for why they didn’t get an MRI on DeLauter’s wrist during the break, Chernoff said, “It’s always a balance on what to do in a situation like this.

“He had been playing through the symptoms in the last two weeks. When he had that uptick in symptoms, we thought it made sense to give him some rest and see where it goes first … see where he lands coming out of the break.

“If there’s more pain, we’ll get it worked up more thoroughly. If not and he can play through it, we’d rather have him play through it.”

DeLauter is hitting .278 (35 for 126) with five homers and 23 RBI in 34 games at Columbus. He underwent sports hernia surgery in March during spring training.

The 6-4, 235-pound DeLauter, a left-handed hitter, has had trouble staying healthy since the Guardians drafted him.
