France won Group D with a goal differential of plus-7, including a 2-1 win against reigning champion England in their first match of the tournament. Only Spain (plus-11) and England (plus-8) had a better goal differential in the Women’s Euro than France.

In its first Women’s Euro since losing in the final to England in 2022, Germany finished second in Group C to Sweden. They will look to get back on track after being blown out in their group stage finale against Sweden, 4-1. It was Germany’s largest loss in the Women’s Euros.

A look at France

France tied with England for the second-most goals scored in the Women’s Euro with 11, trailing only Spain (14). Despite joining the rest of the group winners in going undefeated in the group stage, France is the only team to not lead its respective group in goal differential. They were plus-7, while England finished plus-8.

France enters the quarterfinal match vs. Germany on red-hot form, going 11-0 in matches across all competitions in 2025. Its last loss came on Dec. 3, 2024, to Spain, 4-2, in a friendly.

After starting off the Women’s Euro with a hard-fought 2-1 win vs. England on July 5, France followed it up with a 4-1 victory vs. Wales on July 9 and completed a 3-0 run in group play by blowing out the Netherlands, 5-2.

A win will send France to its second Women’s Euro semifinals in a row. France has never played in the Women’s Euro final.

France players to watch

France had nine different goal scorers over the course of the group stage. Leading the way offensively were Marie-Antoinette Katoto, who plays for French club Olympique Lyon, and San Diego Wave FC’s Delphine Cascarino, who each have two. Katoto has played in all three matches and Cascarino has appeared in two.

Cascarino also has a team-high two assists for France.

Of all the French players who have played in this tournament, the only ones who have started all three matches are the defensive duo of Alice Sombath and Selma Bacha. They each play with Katoto at Lyon.

A look at Germany

Germany’s 4-1 loss to Sweden on July 12 was its first loss in any competition in 2025. Prior to that, it hadn’t lost a match since a 2-1 defeat to Italy in a friendly on Dec. 2, 2024.

But the 2022 Women’s Euro runner-up had done plenty to ensure its spot in the knockout stage, recording a 2-0 win vs. Poland on July 4 and a 2-1 victory vs. Denmark on July 8.

Germany has also won three of its last four meetings vs. France in any competition, with the most recent being a 2-1 victory on Oct. 7, 2022, in a friendly.

Germany players to watch

The duo of Jule Brand and Lea Schuller lead Germany in scoring with two goals apiece. Brand plays at Olympique Lyon and Schuller features for Bayern Munich.

Brand’s second goal of the tournament gave them a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute vs. Sweden. But Germany conceded four goals after Brand’s opener, and forward Carlotta Wamser received a red card, which means she is not available for Saturday.

Wamser’s absence will be noticeable because she had two assists in the tournament, equaling Brand’s total.

Wamser and Brand are part of a new young corps for Germany which had to fill some big shoes after seven members of its 2023 World Cup squad, including forward Alexandra Popp, retired from international competition.

Sjoeke Nusken, who plays for Chelsea in England, is the only other goal scorer for Germany so far in the tournament.
