Brief EF-0 tornado touched down in Medina County, NWS confirms

Cleveland, Ohio The National Weather Service has confirmed that a short tornado made landfall in western Medina County on Monday afternoon.

According to preliminary damage assessments, Chatham Township and Lafayette Township were affected by the EF-0 tornado that erupted at 3:57 p.m. and remained on the ground for two minutes.

According to the meteorological report, the tornado damaged and snapped several trees along its route, slightly damaged a few houses, and wrecked a small, vacant barn. There were no reported injuries.

The Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes with estimated wind speeds of 65 to 85 mph as EF-0 tornadoes. Even though they are regarded as weak, EF-0 tornadoes are capable of causing modest roof damage, broken tree limbs, and damaged shingles. Small trees with shallow roots can potentially be uprooted by them.

The tornado on Monday went 1.32 miles in a southeasterly direction, from just north of Spencer Lake Road to just east of Carsten Road, with an estimated wind speed of 81 mph.

Monday’s showers and thunderstorms were caused by a cold front that passed through the region. Rainfall in Medina County ranged from half an inch to a quarter of an inch.

According to weather service records, the tornado that struck Medina County was Ohio’s 22nd tornado in 2025. By this time last year, the Buckeye State had experienced 64 tornadoes.
